It’s too relatable to say that we’ve experienced a lot since implementing enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in Metro Manila three (3) months ago, right? Most cities and provinces are placed under general community quarantine (GCQ), and it’s up to the people to find ways to continue their livelihoods. Though the Filipinos’ resilience per se is not enough to uphold the economy, the government decided to shift from ECQ to GCQ. So, with GCQ implemented, it may be a little bit easier to run new and/or existing businesses and recover from the damage COVID-19 has brought.
Given the way this pandemic shapes our daily lives, what is the new normal we must expect to see?
1. Hoarding and panic-buying.
Though the lockdown regulations are lenient, the pandemic is still happening out there. Plus, the fact that mass hysteria is possible as COVID-19 cases arise proves that hoarding and panic buying won’t be gone any time soon. The best way to prevent these activities from happening is to refrain from engaging or involving in it.
2. Cashless transactions everywhere.
Paying and receiving money in cash may not be a good idea while we’re in a pandemic, so cashless transactions are now keenly practiced. Don’t worry if you don’t have access to this type of transaction, though! Just observe proper hygiene and a good diet, and you’re good to go.
3. Rare public transport.
Planning to commute to get to work or visit a friend? Unfortunately, public transportation is still a rare sight these days. If you find one, it can get really pricey due to the public’s demand. So, before you plan a trip to work, check online if the public transportation you’re usually taking is available. This will make your plans run smoothly.
4. Door-to-door deliveries.
From basic to luxurious goods, deliveries are now highly preferred by many. Without having to go outside, anyone can just open an app, click onto something, and have it delivered in a matter of time. This proves that technology can be really helpful in times of crisis. Even with GCQ implemented, door-to-door deliveries show no sign of slowing down anytime soon.
5. Work-at-home setting.
Because of the quarantine regulations, most people now work productively at home—saving time, money, and effort at once. Working at home also rids employees of the risk of getting infected outside. Further, they can work peacefully knowing their loved ones are safe by their side.
Back in March, Metro Manila was placed under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) to contain COVID-19. However, our economy is showing a possible downfall. So, in May, the whole National Capital Region (NCR) was placed under modified ECQ (MECQ), in hopes of slowly reopening the economy again. Finally, on May 28, 2020, GCQ was implemented instead.
With over 31,000 cases as of June 23, 2020, the public’s behavior is still unpredictable. This is why the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) expressed that the new norms above will not be overlooked as long as the areas practicing it are placed under any community quarantine.Let’s help our frontliners in this fight. Stay at home as much as possible, practice proper hygiene, and avoid unnecessary contact with outsiders. Confused about GCQ guidelines? Read our ECQ and GCQ guidelines recap.
