Going for a job interview can be one of the most daunting experiences that can lead to a lot of anxiety for most people. Your performance during the interview can directly affect your chance of getting an offer. Hence, it’s important to be as prepared as possible! So, here is a list of things you can do wrong or things you should never mention, but if you avoid these mistakes, you’ll be just fine.
1. Tardiness
It’s important to arrive early for your interview. It shows how much you value the interview opportunity and if you respect those who actually took time out to meet you. If you plan to take public transport, factor in extra commute time to allow for unexpected delays. Plan your route ahead and make sure you know how to get ot the interview venue. Getting caught up in the traffic is no longer an acceptable excuse for being late.
2. Lack of research
This sounds like a no-brainer but you would be surprised by the number of people who don’t do thorough research about their potential role and the company they applied for. Make sure you’re fully prepared before going for any interview.
One of the most commonly asked questions is “why did you decide to apply here?” and if you’re one of those who never do their homework beforehand, you’ll having a hard time trying to answer that. So, spend some time to look through the company website or any recent news about the company. This way, you will also have an appropriate reply to the common “do you have any questions for us?” part of the interview.
3. Wrong attire
Don’t underestimate how much your attire can affect what kind of first impression the interviewer has of you. From the moment you step into the room, the interviewer will start to form their impression of you. It only takes a few seconds for the interviewer to make an initial judgment, and first impression can be hard to change! Your attire should be appropriate to the company’s culture. If you’re not sure what to wear, it’s always safest to keep it formal and professional.
4. Lack of enthusiasm
Always start with a smile and a warm greeting. Upon entering the building, make sure you portray an upbeat and positive persona. Who knows, you might encounter your future boss in the elevator. Enthusiasm can also be expressed by asking relevant questions, laughing at appropriate moments, and much more.
5. Vague answers
When answering any questions asked by the interviewer, make sure you give specific and direct answers. Particularly when it’s about your previous job or the type of skills you have. Connect specific answers to real-life situations and practical experiences in order to give concrete answers to the interviewer.
6. Unclear goals
Let us admit not all of us are goal-oriented and know exactly what we want in our career. However, it doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t give some thoughts about it. Think through it before the interview. What is your goal? Why did you want this job? A goal is important for knowing where you’re heading and what you want to achieve in your career. And it shouldn’t be vague. Be specific when it comes to this.
7. Keep checking your phone
Keep your phone on silent or simply turn it off throughout the whole interview. Avoid holding or putting in on the table during the interview. It’s best to keep it in your pocket or your bag. Body language matters as well; maintain eye contact with the interviewer because it makes you look confident and sincere. Don’t have your eyes roaming around the room especially when the interviewer is talking to you.
8. Lack of courtesy
Being courteous during an interview means showing respect and pay full attention when the interviewer is speaking. You should acknowledge their time and opportunity given for the interview. Remember, not all who apply get shortlisted for the interview. Be thankful and show your appreciation for their time as you leave.
9. No long-term plans with the company
Before the interview, try to think of your year-long plan with the company you applied for. Sure, the company might be a training ground or even a good stepping stone to get you closer to your actual dream job. But, that doesn’t mean that you should take the position lightly. If this company is your entry point to the industry you like, you’re applying for experience and the hands-on trainings. Those are all good but don’t keep emphasizing that you aren’t going to stay for long to the interviewer.
Try to think from the employer’s point of view, they are hiring people who will help the company grow and will stay with them as long as possible. Don’t give them an impression that you are just using the company as a stepping stone or a backup plan before you find a better job elsewhere.
10. Lack of preparation
Going through point 1 to 9, it all boils down to how prepared you are for the interview.. Acing the interview requires a whole lot of preparation. And it has to start with you. Spend more time to prepare yourself before the interview if you truly want to get an offer. You only get one shot at this, better do your best!
